DIAGNOSING YOUR ELBOW PAIN

The complex elbow joint is prone to many conditions causing pain, swelling and a number of other uncomfortable symptoms. Some of the most common conditions we see in our patients are:

BURSITIS

The olecranon bursa is located at the back of the elbow and is a small, fluid-filled sac that works as a cushion between the bone and soft tissues. This bursa can be inflamed and irritated causing pain, swelling, warmth and redness on the skin.

GOLFER’S ELBOW

Golfer’s elbow causes pain that starts on the inside of the elbow joint and radiates down the forearm.  It is due to an injury to the tendons that connect your forearm to the elbow.

TENNIS ELBOW

Tennis elbow causes pain that starts on the outside of the elbow joint and radiates down the forearm.  It is usually caused by an overuse injury.  The pain cane be made worse by flexing the elbow while the hand is facing down or when grabbing things with your hand.  This condition affects the elbow where the tendons of the muscles that extend your wrist joint insert.

OSTEOARTHRITIS

Osteoarthritis causes pain, swelling and reduced range of motion of the elbow joint.  It has usually progressed due to an injury to the elbow in the past e.g. fracture, ligament injury.

TENDINITIS

This occurs when the tendons around your elbow become degenerative or inflamed.
